Festa dell’Olio
San Quirico D’Orcia
From 7th to 9th of December

Ochre coloured carpets, smoky grey scarves, tobacco coloured sheets, the subtlest tones of green and yellow spread all over the hillsides, mark the cycles of changing seasons. Yet during the whole year there is always a filigree of silver light, looking as if spilt out of the moon’s bucket, crossing our territory and making it eternal.

Our brothers the olive trees are humble yet precious, simple and contorted, ancient and always new in productive strength. The oil they produce gives even the simplest dishes a matchless richness of taste.

In 1993 the idea of celebrating our extra virgin olive oil was born. A celebration with the same popular characteristics as the olive tree, a festival with a lot of ingredients, lots of food, as cheerful as the street musicians, the jugglers, fire eaters, and stilt walkers. A festival with the magic taste of simple things just like its protagonist, the extra virgin olive oil of San Quirico which appears everywhere in the village, along the street, in shops, bars and in cellars when least you expect it. It can be tasted on “bruschetta” after “bruschetta” (toasted bread) going from one producer to another. It can be appreciated, measured and compared with the help of an expert guide during oil tasting sessions. You can discover not only its nutritional aspects but also the toning effects that oil has on the body.
