Effetto Araki
Siena
21 June - 30 September

An exhibition devoted to the Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki.

Siena celebrates the great Japanese photographer with a selection of 2200 pictures spanning a career of more than 50 years. The exhibition, organized by the Santa Maria della Scala with the support of Opera-Civita, is curated by Filippo Maggia, showcases photographs from over twenty series taken by Araki from the early 1960s to the present day. Araki was eager to celebrate his work over the past 50 years (he held his first show in 1965) with a selection of 2200 works reviewing his long artistic career and offering a virtually complete overview of his endless, highly complex and multi-faceted output, which stretches well beyond the bondage pictures that have made him a household name worldwide. Many of the series – Satchin and his brother Mabo, Sentimental night in Kyoto, August, Tokyo Autumn and others – are being shown in Italy for the very first time, and for some of them – for example Anniversary of Hokusai’s Death and Gloves – it is also their European debut, while the Araki’s Paradise collection, consisting of photographs that Araki took using his own home as his set, has been specially produced for the Siena exhibition: thus an original, meditative and exciting Araki who appears to wish to condense his entire experience both as an artist and as a man in this show.

Majolica: Gold and Ruby
Assisi
until October 13

There is no important museum in the world that does not preserve examples of the precious Italian "luster" majolica. These include the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Louvre Museum in Paris. ‘Lusture – the gold and ruby of ceramics from the Renaissance to today’ is scheduled at Palazzo Bonacquisti di Assisi from 4 May 2019 to 13 October 2019.

The exhibition traces the development of majolica from its origins to the last creations in the seventeenth century and then, to its revival in the nineteenth century when it returned to being object of vast interest with its still difficult and alchemic methods of today combining design and creativity.

Palio di Siena
16 August

The Palio is the most important event in Siena, taking place on July 2 and August 16 every year.

In the Palio, the various Sienese "contrade", or quaters in which the city is divided, challenge each other in a passionate horse race in the heart of the city in the Piazza del Campo.

Originally, there were about fifty-nine "Contrade"; now only seventeen remain, ten of which take part in the historical pageant and in the race at each Palio (seven by right and three drawn by lots).

The 17 Contrade which still exist today are: the Eagle, Snail, Wave, Panther, Forest, Tortoise, Owl, Unicorn, Shell, Tower, Ram, Caterpillar, Dragon, Giraffe, Porcupine, She-Wolf and the Goose.

The Palio horse race has its origins in the distant past, with historical records indicating horse races in Siena already taking place in the 6th century.

The Palio is much more than a simple event for the Sienese, it actually is a large part of their lives since the time of their birth. Each person belongs to a Contrada, participates in the life of the Contrada and the organization of the Palio throughout the entire year. The Sienese live the Palio with great passion and you'll certainly be able to see this if you have the chance to attend one of the races.
